‘Reawekening’ ~ 47.5″ x 47.5″ Framed

Living in the foothills of the San Juan Mountain is Southern Colorado, I get to enjoy mountain views on a daily basis. I love spending time outdoors, taking in the views of the mountains that seem to go on forever, fading into infinity. Seeing the sun rising from behind the mountains, lighting up the landscape and seemingly giving it new life is a magical moment. Everything seems anew as the landscape wakes up for the day ahead – it is a unique phenomenon that happens everyday but never ceases to amaze. A couple of years ago, I created 2 sets of lotus sculptures to express my fascination with the power of new beginnings that each day brings us. There is so much in that which can be so uplifting when you find yourself needing a change.

I looked back on the two sculpture installations included here while painting the sky in this newest painting. The pinkish lotus flowers face East toward Sangre de Cristo Mountains seen from my 40 acre Mystic Valley Sculpture Park in Mosca, Colorado. These lotus flowers are symbolic relics, opening up toward the rising sun that comes up from our beautiful Mt Blanca. On a different part of the property, I installed my other 5 lotus flowers which face the West toward San Juan Mountains and the setting sun – they have more of a night shade color scheme and represent the flowers getting ready to close for the night. Together these 10 flowers represent the cycle of new beginnings, a theme I love to explore. By adding my lotus pattern to this new painting, I wanted to create an image that has a deeper meaning for me, hoping it will do the same for other viewers.
